Potential Interviews

I have been in contact with two designers who said they would answer my questions, and a third has shown interest through a friend. I am hoping to get the answers of at least two designers within the next week or two.

In other news: I had an interview today for a Graphic Design job in London! 😀 Next up is an art test so fingers crossed they like it!

Media Test 2

I started making a media test for the second case study (flat design), but as I was going to iterate on it I couldn’t find the file… below is what I made in response to a brief on 99designs. It is a landing page and pop up window for a golf website.

As I couldn’t iterate on the design above I decided to make another media test. This time for an art test brief I got. The link contains the magazine pages I designed and below that is a gif of a facebook post.

Interview

Today was the big day! I interviewed Lyall, we met at a cafe in town. He was lovely and easy to talk to. It feels like it went well, and I believe I got a few good quotes from him. It was all recorded (not sure about the quality yet).

I will transcribe the interview tomorrow or the day after to get a better grasp on it.

GRADES :O

I forgot to tell you guys! I am so happy with myself cause last semester I got all A’s! 😀

Showcase Things

As I mentioned I have decided what to make for the showcase, more or less. I am going to start by making the branding of a fake company, this company makes educational apps for children and so I will also design the apps, which will tie into the company branding. There might also be a website design as well as business cards and other promotional material.

After having done this the plan is to do it again with a new company, which of course would need different material and so on. I would like to use a real company for one of these, but I have not decided yet. I intend to make at least two sets, hopefully more.

The first company with the educational apps is called Space Dolphin (for now anyway). It has a range of apps teaching children of all ages about space 😀

I am going to use the knowledge I have gathered from the case studies, media tests and interviews when applicable as I make these designs.

Semester 2!

I’m back from the holidays! Alright, I’ve been back a while and might have forgotten to update the blog, sorry ^^;

So a quick update. Just before Christmas I was hired as a freelance UI designer by Puny Astronaut, a student led games company making a game named Glaze. I have since then mostly worked on said game, but I can’t show any of it yet cause of NDA.

More relevant to my project I have slightly changed it… again. Basically it’s the same as before just instead of focusing on branding trends I have decided to focus on trends caused by functionality needs. This way I can be more board when it comes to different parts of graphic design (UI, branding, flyers, and so on) but the project is still fairly narrow in that it’s only functionality caused trends I look at.

I have also contacted a graphic designer in town, who has agreed for me to interview him. We are still deciding on date and time but it’s a great start to the interviews! Now I just need to find two more…

Furthermore I have come up with more of a plan for what to make this semester to show at the showcase, more about this in the next post.

Interview questions

I have started thinking about what to ask in the interviews I plan on conducting. My approach to this was simply to write down all the things I’d like to know. I will show this list to David to see what he says and then re-word it to form functioning questions. Here’s the list:

How much thought they have given trends in graphic design.

If they actively looked up trends/follow trends and if so how often/how much time they spend on it.

If it was part of their higher education to look at trends, if they studied graphic design or something similar.

If not, would they have found it useful if they had?

If they apply any knowledge they might have of trends to their work knowingly, or when thinking back maybe subconsciously.

If knowingly, how do they apply it? Give an example?

What their thoughts are on the importance of trend awareness in the graphic design industry.

Deck of Cards

I am currently working on designing a deck of cards using the trend geometric shapes. The trend has been found both in branding and other mediums, and although the cards are not branding, I think that designing for other things, and thinking about functionality can be helpful for developing skills that will be useful for branding as well.

So far I have the Ace’s and 2-10’s worked out, though I might add something to the 2-10’s… we’ll see. I have also made one of the Jacks.

The Jack can be seen from both sides, so no matter which was you hold the card you see the image right way up. The rest of the clad cards will work the same way.
